Army Inspired Tasting Menu
|
|
Wed, 20 Oct 10 - 20 Oct 10
A special 'Army Inspired Tasting Menu' to support local veterans.
Join three generations of the McCaig family at The Holt for a very special charity dinner on Wednesday October 20th complete with wartime tales from a very special Guest Chef.
Taking inspiration from Army cuisine, Angus McCaig will be serving up an unforgettable 5 course themed Tasting Menu reinventing the components from a soldier's typical ration pack and Officer's food from the era.
A share of the evenings proceeds will be donated to 'The Baton' a local charity established last year by Honiton Barber and ex-serviceman Alan Rowe to help support the UK's armed forces veterans as they integrate back into society.
As well as hearing about the charitys work from Alan, diners will also be treated to stories from the special Guest Chef for the evening - Mary Mead (Gus & Joe's Gran), who now a spritely 94 years of age, spent World War II stationed in Dorchester ensuring the Officers were well fed each day.
Mary will also be joined by Mary Ann - her daughter and the co-founder of the nearby Otter Brewery so expect plenty of very amusing tales from this unique double act!

Falmouth Oyster Festival
|
|
Thu, 14 Oct 10 - 17 Oct 10
Valentine Warner, food writer and star of BBC Two's "What To Eat Now" will be the open this year's festival with a demonstration of his culinary expertise and passion for cooking with local Cornish ingredients.
Falmouth Oyster Festival celebrates the start of the oyster dredging season one of the last remaining traditional oyster fisheries dredging only with the characteristic Falmouth Working Boats or oyster rowing punts. The Festival will embrace sustainability again this year, returning the empty oyster shells to the oyster beds around the River Fal to form the 'cultch' or base on which the young oysters will grow.
Cookery is an integral part of this year's festival, which is packed with demonstrations by leading local chefs and an atmosphere unique to the event. Visitors will enjoy highly prized local native oysters, shell fish, seafood and other mouth-watering food, as well as champagne and wines from Walter Hicks and Skinners ales, including - the specially brewed oyster ale.
There'll also be daily cookery demonstrations by top Falmouth chefs, fish filleting, oyster opening and simple fish cookery, as well as marquees brimming with Cornish food, produce and crafts. Evening entertainment includes shanty singing and live music, with evening entertainment until 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
Kids will love the shell painting and schools town parade, whilst grown up can sign up for a gourmet evening with Valentine Warner at St Michael's Hotel, a sea shanty lunch and the Oyster Ball on Friday October 22.

Accents du Sud Ouest Wine Dinner
|
|
Wed, 06 Oct 10 - 06 Oct 10
The South West of France has a rich history of gastronomy, song, rugby and of course wine. A number of the leading, family owned wineries have joined forces to promote their wines and spirits under the banner Accents du Sud Ouest.
Michael Caines at ABode Exeter will be hosting a wine dinner event on Wednesday 6th October. These wines possess great individuality and integrity as well as a natural compatibility with food. Made from unique, indigenous grape varieties such as Malbec, Tannat, Petit Manseng, Negrette, Duras, Len de l'el, and Baco, they can be powerful, sometimes challenging, but once you've developed a taste for them, nothing else confers the same kind of pleasure. Six-courses with 6 accompanying wines.
£60.00 per person. Quote 'Food Magazine' when booking.

Celebration Of Beef
|
|
Fri, 01 Oct 10 - 31 Oct 10
Celebration of Beef at The River Grille The West Country is famous for its drive for local, fresh produce and none more so than at The River Grille, Bristol's iconic restaurant overlooking the historic harbourside. Light and airy in space with a superb lounge to enjoy cocktails and listen to live jazz at the weekends. A place to watch the world go by.
Leading the River Grille team is Executive Chef Wayne Third, who took over in March of this year, adding a new dimension, and culinary vision to the heart of Bristol. Continuing our goal of searching for the finest in West Country ingredients simply prepared and served with a friendliness that is true to Bristol.
Last years festival drew an overwhelming response from locals and visitors alike; hence Celebration of Beef 2010. Sourced from local farms, we have put together a selection of prime cuts that will certainly whet your appetite.
Limousin 'It is widely acknowledged that Limousin cattle in the South West are equal to others anywhere else in the country. Many are descended from famous bloodlines with both British and French origins. They are concentrated in Devon and Somerset, with a rising population in Cornwall and a few herds in Wiltshire and Dorset.
Devonshire 'The Red Ruby Devon is a tremendously popular breed of beef cow. Prized for its good temperament, and its marbled, succulent beef.'
Hereford 'Herefords produce an excellent 'marbled' beef that is in great demand both within the UK and for export due to its distinctive flavour and renowned eating quality.'
